Quote o’ the day

“Your thoughts create your emotions.”

This is a simple quote that my mom and I have been thinking about this week. My mom calls it “switching the channel in your head” so that you focus on something positive and change your outlook. Tough to do but definitely worth striving for!

Friday Favourite: Christmas?

I have a firm “no Christmas activity until December 1″ rule.* I don’t even listen to Christmas music until December 23. Everything has changed this year… I have no idea what has gotten into me.

It all started last weekend when I agreed to attend the Santa Claus parade. I came home inspired to complete my Christmas card list. After that, I dug out my box of Christmas decorations. I had no intention of decorating yet but decided to dig out the box to be ready for when December rolls around. Very innocently, I opened it up to look at the decorations. Next thing I knew, my apartment was decorated for Christmas…. 2 weeks before December even began!

Now there seems to be no stopping me. Yesterday I bought Voortman Christmas cookies (another thing I usually would save for December). Today I stopped to buy cleaning supplies at Canadian Tire and found myself wandering the Christmas aisles, admiring all the decorations. Not only that, I bought something! And voila, this week’s Friday favourite. It’s so cute that I may have to start decorating in November every year. Seriously, what has gotten into me?!?

*I should note that the “not before December 1″ rule does not apply to Christmas shopping. I like to have that done by the end of October to avoid the Christmas pandemonium at the mall. You may now proceed to leaving comments accusing me of being Scrooge.

On Eating Healthfully

In an effort to have a good, healthy and balanced diet (not one of my strong suits), I established a couple standards:

  1. Drink as little pop as possible. (I’m working on it!)
  2. A delicious cookie from the college cafeteria is only allowed on Fridays.

It has already been Friday three times this week.

How about you? Any healthy endeavours? I hope it’s going better than my once-a-week cookie rule.

Andrea Brown: The Movie

A movie about an admissions officer? Who knew that my occupation was so exciting? (And why wasn’t I asked for input?)

In my lunchbox

With all the talk of Twinkies this week, I now have a ridiculous craving for one… and I don’t think I’ve actually had a Twinkie in at least fifteen years. I’m not sure if it’s the snack that we’ll all miss or just the fact that another remnant from our childhood may be disappearing for good. (Although I doubt it… Twinkies = money and companies know it!)

When I was a kid, I had a bright red lunchbox with Mickey and Minnie on it. Actually, most of childhood clothes, bags and toys had something to do with Mickey and Minnie but I suppose the lunchbox is the most memorable because that’s where the food was! My dad always packed my lunch and (apologies to my childhood friends’ moms) he by far made the best ones. One of my classmates even asked if my dad would make an extra sandwich for her and she would pay for it. Looking back, I should have taken her up on it… may have been a good business endeavour for an eight-year-old.

These days, my dad has long retired from making my lunches. I should really take a page from his lunch-recipe-book, dig out my Mickey and Minnie lunchbox, and fill it with a delicious sandwich, fruit and a Zebra Cake. It would be a huge improvement from some of the lunches I come up with. Even a rare Twinkie would beat my lunch most days. Tradesies anyone?

Case of the Mondays?

Sometimes it’s just hard to fight that “ick” feeling that comes with Monday morning. In my endeavour to shift my thoughts to positivity or glass-half-full-ness, here are some things I’m thankful for this Monday morning:

  • Hot cereal (with lots of cinnamon!)
  • Caffeine
  • Very understanding and gracious parents who don’t think I’m insane (or else I’m thankful that they hide that opinion well!)
  • Grumpy cat
  • Awesome weekends with friends
  • Ian the Ion
  • Lunches that are already packed and ready to go to work
  • Glittery nail polish
  • Newspring podcasts that provide hope and perspective
  • Grace. Always grace.

Encouragement on a “blah” day

Continuing with the encouragement sent to me on a recent “blah” day, my mom sent me Psalm 42. It’s been a huge encouragement to me this week, take a moment to soak in some truth:

As the deer pants for streams of water,
so my soul pants for you, my God.
My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.
When can I go and meet with God?
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while people say to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”
These things I remember
as I pour out my soul:
how I used to go to the house of God
under the protection of the Mighty One
with shouts of joy and praise
among the festive throng.

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

My soul is downcast within me;
therefore I will remember you
from the land of the Jordan,
the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
in the roar of your waterfalls;
all your waves and breakers
have swept over me.

By day the Lord directs his love,
at night his song is with me—
a prayer to the God of my life.

I say to God my Rock,
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why must I go about mourning,
oppressed by the enemy?”
My bones suffer mortal agony
as my foes taunt me,
saying to me all day long,
“Where is your God?”

Why, my soul, are you downcast?
    Why so disturbed within me?
Put your hope in God,
for I will yet praise him,
    my Savior and my God.

- Psalm 42 (emphasis mine)
